LCC striving to win the “Donk” Trophy

The Lane Cove Cats take on the Modewarre Warriors in a battle for the “Donk” Trophy this Queens Birthday weekend.

2014-06-07 12.25.47The game was initially played as a friendly against the two teams in 2014. Lead by our most recent past-president, Nick Brumley, we took a group of players down to Victoria to experience footy in the games heartland.

The game was played in atrocious conditions. Despite the temperature barely getting into double figures and a torrential downpour for most of the second half of the game, the boys ran away with a well earned victory.

The experience achieved during this trip was immeasurable. The team, largely consisting of Under 10 players at the time, went on to become a formidable team in the local Greater Sydney Junior league. However, the bonding between the boys is something that will last much longer.

This year we will be playing for the Donk trophy, in honour of Denis Fitzgerald Snr, whose sadly passed away last year and who’s sons (Denis and Mike) lead the respective clubs.

I’m sure you will join us in wishing the players the best of luck and hope they bring home that trophy.

The players will be able to assist with training, meet and greet players and their families, sign autographs and be available for photo’s.

This will be a great opportunity for the children to mix closely with some of the great up and coming champions of our game. This was on display on the weekend with the Giants beating the reigning premiers with a great display of hard running, committed man-on-man football.

Bring you footy’s, autograph books or cameras, and we’ll see you all at Blackman Park at 4:30pm this Thursday!

Last week we saw the culmination of Eliza Fitzgerald’s work in collecting footy books for indigenous communities in Queensland.

Eliza presented over 120 footy boots in a handover ceremony to the Inala Panthers NRL Club at the Inala Indigenous Health Care Clinic in Brisbane.

Thanks goes to everyone for their generous support and encouragement of Eliza to collect her more than 120 pairs of footy boots.

Highlights of our 2014 season

If you need any convincing as to the fun and enjoyment the children experience playing AFL, take a look at a video of our 2014 season.

Produced by our dedicated media team of Eliza and Sara Fitzgerald, it shows some of the wonderful moments of our season for both our Auskick and junior competition teams.

We had 65 children playing Auskick and 3 junior teams playing in the AFL Greater Sydney Junior league.

Please be advised that the video is large (at 300MB) and could take some time to download. Otherwise it can be watched while streamed live.
