U12 YGs Swanson vs Willoughby Wildcats – Gold @ELS North Ryde
Today we faced a team that consistently challenged us last season, and we went into the game expecting another solid defensive effort was going to be required.
With a few substitutes this week we focused on making sure each player was trying their best, and running and tackling, without conserving energy, and then coming off to let our players with ‘fresh legs’ run on.
This seemed to work to our advantage, with some dominant defence, and early goals in the first half to give us a small lead at the main break.
It was great to see newcomers such as Amber, Zara, Grace and Lucy feature in the tackling and contesting as their confidence in play steadily increases.
Some noticeably improved tackling effort from Elin, Lexie P and Charli G helped to balance the defensive effort across the team with others such as Olive and Izzy W chiming in in the forwards at the right time.
Some good centre work by Lexie W, Charlotte A, Lily S and Lily D and later in the game by Annabelle and Charlie D helped to keep the ball forward and improve our scoring opportunities.
Strong pressure in our final quarter gave us numerous scoring opportunities from intercepted marks, with Emma, Charlotte Z, Lily D and Zoe all having direct ’set shots’ at goal.
Although prominence is often given to the goal scorers in AFL, we can’t take away from the 3 goals scored by Zoe today, and the goal each for Grace, Izzy, Lucy and Emma. Of note, was that this was Lucy’s first goal for the team.
I think some goal kicking practice is on the cards for training this week, with 15 ‘behinds’ (1 point) scored by our team this week.
Thanks to our parents who gladly help out with team duties and cheer and support from the sideline.
Thank to our team manger, Nat and assistant coaches Jemma, Ro and Jono who share the load
We all shared the view that today’s game was a ‘great game to watch’
