We play as a team and we win as a team. This week we lost as a team
Defeat is hard to swallow, as a group of 10 and 11 year olds found out on Sunday on an oval in Macquarie Park.
They had ridden a wave of confidence over the past couple of months. Win after win since the half way mark of the season had heightened their belief that this was their moment. Even so, they commenced the final series with a certain level of trepidation.
However a strong win over the Hawks, followed by gutsy performance against the Wildcats saw them start the grand final full of confidence. They dared to dream!
In the end, they were purely and simply beaten by a better team. However they were winners before they even ran onto the oval. They learnt that as a collective unit, they can be much more effective. They learnt that even though you might not kick the goal, you still have an important role to play. They learnt to respect the game, the opponents and the umpires
While the boys were rightly disappointed not to win, the smile on their faces not long after the end of the game was testament to how much fun they’ve had this year. Just check out the photo’s (kindly taken by Chris Byrne) for evidence.
They just love kicking the footy with their mates. It just so happens that have become very good at doing it.
See you all next year.
